Dear Brother and Sister Curtis:

Responding to your letter of June 20th I enclose one or two items which may be of interest to you.

You will be interested to know that President McKay encouraged my son, Reed, to stay with the John Birch Society indicating that it would be vindicated and become a powerful organization in the preservation of our freedom.

With best wishes

Sincerely,

Ezra Taft Benson

I think the John Birch Society magazine, The New American, probably does more good in defending freedom than anything else they ever did. I very much admire and appreciate Pres. McKay for standing up to the socialists in the Church, and for his willingness to place principle ahead of popularity. When he assigned his counselor J. Reuben Clark Jr. to interview the faculty and staff at BYU, and fire all of them who would not promise to stop defending and teaching socialism, they both made a lot of enemies. But there have been no similar purges within the Church or it’s subsidiaries since then. Consequently, whereas in the past it was rare to find a socialist BYU professor or priesthood leader in the Church, now it is rare to find a conservative one. The BOM is ignored.
